Cartooning vs realism style

Its common that kids or new comers want to judge all styles by same 8 head rule, after all, in many art schools, they teach that, that manga sucks, and everything that isnt on a museum sucks. And there is a reason for that, now that in older i can understand it. They do it, to make the student to focus on realism, because realism are the bases of cartoonist, are the bones of core style.

But there is some people that cant see this yet, because they are young, or in most cases, they are Jackasses.

I know this because im used to be one, until one day a friend told me, that i cant measure others people work with manga too, that some people may hate my drawings, because cartoon or stylized cant be as universal as realism.

Some people will be surprised to see a sergio aragones realistic drawing,even if his style its cartoony, same lesean or cheekz.

Ive even draw realistic sometimes, but in sketches you wont see, because having an style its not an excuse to forget the core structure, realism. Because you need to remember why and how to stylize.

So its common to get comments from beginners, or people that dont realize this, like eyes cant be that big, nose to damn small, forehead big. Sometimes very arrogant comments, saying like you are dumb, for not knowing.

OHHHHHHHHHHHH YES, WE KNOW KID.

No excuse for twisted arms broken fingers or ackward positions, but thats cool about drawings, its a process and we are learning.

My drawings can look with no consistence, always changing, its because i havent found my style yet, i know even at this old age, but i can tell you 100% that i wont search realism, because i found it really, really, really boring.

Even my themes are fantasy.

Ive enjoy others people styles, and its easy to tell if they know realism, you wont find me saying to them, legs are too long, as an example, because if they draw long legs its because they love it that way, and thats something i respect.

If my style were music, it will rebbecca black friday, something viral that with time will be forgotten, but the people that wont hate it will love it, so im playing for them, because if there is a single person on this stage that wants to hear me, i will play for him, and we will dance.

Art blocks a blessing or a curse?

I had seen in many years, people getting worried of art blocks, many giving solutions how to over come them, hearing music, trying something else in technique, changing subject. Trying yoga, drinking red bulls, beers in my case. And many many stuff.

But those get rid of art blocks forever gone? You cant bet it not.

All people have artblocks, the talented people are the only ones to say that never ever ever happen to them. They dont know what an artblock is. They never had one in their all life career. I think thats a lie, we all had artblocks, but you got to get rid of them quickly, or you cant be a professional.

A professional dont have time to spend on an art block, you will still need to draw having one, after all you need to get a deadline done. That can be the best solution, keep drawing, dont let the artblock win.

From my personal point of view Artblocks are EGO killers. Artblocks grab your feet to the ground, you will realize you are human, you arent perfect. Your mind its exhausted and need some break.

For example you did a great picture, then you do another incredible picture, your brain starts to move some internal drugs making you feel great, that you can draw anything in the world, that you had surpassed your self, that you are almost a divine entity, hahah i exaggerated on last one. But minutes after you feel that way........

...............Boom the Artblock happens.

After the happening you realize you arent divine, you realize you arent as good as other artists, you realize your flaws on past pictures you made, you feel you cant hold a pencil on your hand. A white page havent been so intimidating in your life, you try many times but nothing came along.

I call the artblock the ego hangover, when the euphoric drugs in your brain worth off, heyyyyy i like that artblock its an ego hangover for me.

So its cool to have ego hangovers, because you realize you arent perfect, then you came out with strategies, to surpass yourself. I wonder if we never had artblocks, we will try harder? We will try to surpass the obstacle getting better? I think not.

Artblocks are the drawn lines that make you surpass to a new level, for example you learn anatomy pretty well lets say an arm, then you start drawing the lots of perfect arms, but your brain notice the rest of the body its wrong, but you cant see it, he tries to warn you with an art block. He shuts down all your creativity machine, until you figure out whats wrong. Then you rest, try to learn a couple of things then go back, the brain see your drawing and evaluate the test, if you are drawing something he doesnt like, it will shut you down again. Saying start a new one and you better please me. If you improved something the brain will look at it and say, wow i like that shoe you drawn, even if the rest its crap, but love that shoe, you get a green light, and he leaves you to finish it.

Artblocks are signs of bored brains, and ego checking, if your ego its huge compared to the drawing skills, the brain will evaluate that and will shut down the creative machinery. The brain wants to be entertained, it cant laugh of the same joke over and over, because it will, and i mean it, will shut down the creativity factory, until you came out with new skill or a new joke.

So my advices to avoid artblocks, its stay low, really low, so the brain wont notice your ego its high, always think that you art arent perfect, because if you think its perfect, the ego hangover will be harder. Never compare to other artists, because you will feel you cant draw, the brain will get mad at you and shut you down, because he doesnt wants you to look at other people, he doesnt want distraction from you goal, to please him.

Past week had a terrible artblock.

If an artblock happens and i promise you it will, instead of blocking out, analize what you are doing wrong in your pictures, read a book of art improve something, the brain will be pleased and give you a green light.

Artblocks are creativity vacations, and what do you do in vacations, enjoy it, relax, let you brain hear music, play videogames go out dating, sometimes he just wants to see your friends, not a piece of paper.

If we didnt had this vacations of mind we will be glued to a desk, and thats sad.

Well thats just my point of view, i hope i had help some people to see artblocks not as something bad, but as something necessarily to improve.

have you ever made the question if you really needed to be in this medium?, have you ever felt if you had study something else for a career?. Its just one of those days when you feel really bad, especially bills coming, and not money to pay them out.

Finally my drawing table returned.

Spend all the day of yesterday, giving some love to this piece of wood, made this board like 6 years ago, and it was perfect, but bought a new one, you know the one bigger artists use, but never got the same vibe in it, and unfortunately i gave it as a gift to a friend that he was in art school, and never went comfortable again in my portable sketcher, then one day i invited my friends to draw at my house, and saw it again after like 3 or 4 years, i almost lose tears while watching it, then my friend notice it, then past week he returned and gave it to me again. Reunionnnn my child returned.

So yesterday i was polish it, because paint was off, it had oils on it, some cuts with a cutter knife, and the surface was out of shape, so took me a lot of time to polish it, ended brand new, and painted by hand.

I made this one long time ago, with a wood and a metal thing of a recycled board my sister broken, so i just used an screw driver, some rematches metal things and ready.

It doesnt matter if im upside down, on a chair, on a bed, on a coffin, its the perfect size, i just place it on my belly and paper ends right were my eyes needs it.

Usually people ask me, hey Hector how do you do it?, how do you make lines and scans so clean?, thy get so mad when i just reply the, well i just use the eraser. They want an answer of a magical scanner, a magical pencil holder, magical undirty paper, nope, just an eraser and lots of patience.

Sorry guys, noticing i got a lot of fans that doesnt speak spanish, and to avoid losing to much time writting in two languages decided to write it in english, dont worry there will be updated almost daily.

Okay finally after more than 10 years, decided to make a fanart of Flcl, it has always been intimidating, because i was lacking of skills, now i feel i can do something nicely.

Had like 18 brushes, but now i reduce them to 6, helps me to be more creative and less complicated.

You can see the image below of the piece ive been working on, probably will continue this one when i get free time, need to do some samus and other commissions.

Es la primera vez que intento algo asi, lo mas probable es que convierta esta pagina en un portafolio online, tendre que aprender a como separar los blogs de las imagenes y como hacer que esto funcione pero creo que un paso a la vez es bueno.

Aun no entiendo lo de edicion y eso pero, espero aprender a utilizarlos. El dia de ahora tengo que mandar los sketchess que me pidieron en mi pagina, ufff, tendre que ponerme empaquetarlos.

Espero ver si sabre la forma de subir imagenes de bocetos diarios aqui, habra que ver.
